If you're older than 40 then you may recognize my latest project(s). I started them both just a little over a year ago. They're vintage pattern planes (today it's called ballistic pattern) from the 70's. Both are Don Lowe designs - the Phoenix 7 and Phoenix 8. Both have Rossi 60s, Macs headers and pipes, and spring air retracts. They're all composite finished with PPG DCC acrylic urethane. I was going to put flames going back from the phoenix pattern on the wings but it looked so good without them that I elected not to. I still may do some with vinyl to see what it looks like - Andy?
I had planned to maiden them today but elected to change out the 35 year old bearings in the Rossi 60 pumper in the "8." Both engines ran great on the bench but the one feels a little rough and I decided the best thing to do was swap the bearings out before they shell! These will turn up around 15,000 rpm static with an 11x7 prop and I had forgotten what an incredible sound - spelled ENERGY - these produce when they're running.
This is before we even dreamt of hovering airplanes. Thanks for making the stickers Andy.
This is the phoenix 7 rigged before I started the finish work. October 2009.
